RHODES MUSEUM

The Archeological Museum is located right at the lower end of the Street of the Knights, at the northern part of the old town. This was the hospital during the reign of the Knights of St John, and the second largest building in Rhodes
.
The Grand Master Fluvian, who reigned in 1421-37, bequested 10,000 coins for the building of, as is stated in his will, a "xenodoheio", which is Greek for hotel, or Vessel doheio for Strangers xenos. The construction was completed in 1485, under the reign of Grand Master Pierre d' Aubusson. Its inner courtyard, like that of the Palace of Grand Masters, is typical of Byzantine and medieval architecture, and it is reminiscent of most building construction in Italy and France. The statue of the sitting lion dominating the courtyard used to adorn a grave in the city's ancient cemetery, and was moved there by the Italians in the 20th century.

The Museum contains marble engravings from the Knights' era, statues and friezes from the late classical and Hellenistic era (4th and 3th centuries BC), statues and other items portraying Aphrodite (Venus), etc. Among the exhibits, a head of God Helios (Sun) and the Pottery Rooms with findings from Ialyssos have special interest.
The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 8 am-2.30 pm, |
