THE AQUARIUM OF RHODES
The Rhodes Aquarium is one of very few aquariums of any note in Greece and is run by the National Center for Marine Research.
The building, a combination of local and art deco architecture, was put up during the 1912-43 Italian occupation of the Dodecanese islands. The Reale Istituto di Ricerche Biologiche di Rodi (Royal Biological Research Institute of Rhodes), was built under Governor Mario Lago in 1934.
The exterior of the building remained unchanged until 1971-72, when an exhibition hall and a pool for seals were added near the north side. The Greek Ministry of Culture has classified the original building as an historical landmark and as a distinguished example of the International style of architecture.
The Institute opened in 1937 and focused mostly on biological and hydrological subjects related to the Aegean and also on problems regarding sponge fishing, fisheries and agricultural entomology, together with its aquarium of samples of the Mediterranean fauna.
The Aquarium is open daily, except of the Greek Holidays
Opening hours are April 1–October 1, 9 am to 8.30 pm, November 1-March 31, 9 am to 4.30 pm.
